Leach Lines

Leach Lines

The leach field is where effluent leaves the tank and returns to the soil. When it stops accepting water the whole system backs up, and no amount of pumping the tank fixes a field that has failed.

When to call

What usually brings people to this

Inland Empire water is hard, and hard water is the quiet reason water heaters here give out earlier than the sticker claims.

(909) 888-8736

These are the symptoms that usually prompt the call. Any one of them is worth a conversation, and most of them get cheaper to deal with the earlier they are looked at.

  • Standing water or soggy ground over the field

  • Grass noticeably greener over the leach lines

  • Backups returning soon after the tank is pumped

  • Sewage odor outdoors

  • Drains slowing throughout the building

Every system gives warning before it fails outright. Acting on the warning is the cheapest version of this.

How we work it

We check the obvious causes before the expensive ones, in that order.

See our work

  1. Confirm it is the field and not the tank

A full tank and a failed field look similar from inside the house and need completely different work.

  2. Inspect the lines

Location, depth and condition. Fields fail from biomat buildup, compaction, root intrusion or simple age.

  3. Restore or replace

Some fields can be rehabilitated. Others have reached the end and need rebuilding, which is excavation work.

  4. Set it up to last

How a field is used determines how long it lasts, and there are habits worth knowing about.

Solids settle in the tank, effluent moves through the distribution box, and the leach field returns it to the soil. A problem in one shows up as symptoms of the other.

Worth knowingWhat leach lines actually involves

You get the number before any work begins, and it is based on what we actually found rather than a worst-case figure padded for safety.

The most common cause of premature drain field failure that we see is not age. It is water volume and compaction. A field sized for a family of three struggles with a family of six, and it fails much faster if vehicles park on it or heavy landscaping compacts the soil above it. Fields are not indestructible and they are not repairable in the way pipes are. Treating them carefully is much cheaper than rebuilding them.

Locating equipment marks depth and position before anyone digs, which is the difference between one careful excavation and several exploratory ones.

Four decades of work in this region built a service area that covers most of the Inland Empire. If you are outside the usual radius, call and ask. We cover more ground than most shops our size.

Keeping it from happening again

Every system gives warning before it fails outright. Acting on the warning is the cheapest version of this.

  • If you are on septic, know your pumping interval and keep to it. It is the single highest-return maintenance item in plumbing, because the alternative is a drain field, and drain fields cost many times what pumping does.

  • For commercial property, a maintenance schedule on drains and interceptors costs a fraction of emergency response, and it is the difference between planned work and a closure.

  • Keep grease out of drains, and that includes running hot water after it. Hot water simply carries it further down the line to somewhere less convenient.

  • Watch your water bill. A bill that climbs without a change in habits is often the only warning a hidden leak will give you before the damage shows.

Who you are calling

The phone is answered by people who know the work, so the conversation is useful rather than a message being taken.

More about the family

Big Mike founded this company in 1982 and ran it the way he wanted to be treated. When he stepped down he handed it to his family, Megan Cortez, Saul Cortez and Jimilee Allen, because he trusted them to give people the same service he had. That is still who runs it and still who answers the phone.

We are licensed across plumbing, sanitation and general engineering, which reflects the range of work this region actually needs.

Forty-four years in the same valley means we have almost certainly fixed this exact thing for somebody down the street from you.

Questions we get about leach lines

If yours is not here, call and ask. We would rather talk it through than have you guess.

Why did my field fail?

Usually biomat: a layer that builds at the soil interface until it stops accepting water. Compaction from vehicles, root intrusion and age all contribute.

Will pumping the tank fix it?

No. Pumping empties the tank and buys a short window. If the field cannot accept effluent, the problem returns quickly.

Can I park on a drain field?

No. Vehicle weight compacts the soil and crushes the lines, and it is one of the most common causes of premature failure we see.

How long should a field last?

Decades with reasonable use and regular pumping. Overloading it with water or solids shortens that considerably.

Do you guarantee your work?

We stand behind what we do. If something we repaired is not right, call us and we will come back and deal with it.

Can you look at more than one problem while you are here?

Yes, and it is usually worth doing. A second issue looked at during a visit you are already paying for costs far less than a separate call.

Does a real person answer when I call?

Yes. The line is answered live around the clock, so you are talking to somebody who can send a truck, not leaving a message for the morning.

Can you handle septic as well as plumbing?

Yes, and it is a big part of what we do. We are licensed for sanitation systems, so tanks, leach lines and the plumbing that feeds them are all one contractor.

How this fits the rest of the system

Septic systems are far more sensitive to what goes into them than sewer connections are. A municipal system dilutes and treats at scale. A septic tank is a small ecosystem where wipes, grease, harsh chemicals and excessive water all cause real damage. The habits of the household matter more to septic longevity than the age of the equipment does.

Before we come out

Knowing the age of the house and roughly when the plumbing was last worked on narrows what we are looking for.

We reach the valley cities routinely and the outlying communities regularly. If you are unsure whether you are in range, the answer is usually yes and it costs nothing to ask.
